Nexa DHC-6 Twin Otter Nature Air 1870mm (73.6") Wingspan - ARF Reviews

4.8 Rating 5 Reviews
Overall assembly was fine, instructions could probably be refined a bit. This was my first balsa build out so that could be part of it. The instructions have you use dowel pins in the wings on either side of the spar. Those seemed like too little support, so I cut some dowels long enough to go all the way across the fuselage into the wings. Lots of internal space for electronics and cabling, I tried to run cables under floor to keep them away from the rudder and elevator servos. I am using two 4s 4000 mAh batteries and i added 4.5 ounces of weight to the tail. This balanced the aircraft on CG, but in flight required some nose down trim. The trim issue could be due to my construction. I think I am going to remove .5 ounce from the tail an try that. Overall great experience and the maiden went very well. Power was good using 4240 1000kV motors with 45A ESCs from spektrum turning 11x7 3 blade props from MAS. I put the ESCs in the nacelles. Couple of reasons for 4 stars. Vacuum formed pieces could have fitted better from the get-go but not a huge deal. Supplied decals are not great so we made our own for "Nature Air" logos. The big one for me was the linkages for wing control surfaces. The nut that holds the linkage to servo arm does not stay tight. I would recommend changing that to a lock nut, using thread locker, or replace the linkage from the get-go. On the second flight the linkage for the right aileron disconnected because the nut backed-off and fell away causing the linkage to disconnect totally from the aileron. I did check before flight. I landed with only left aileron for roll authority. Landing was a little rough. Luckily just bent the main gear slightly. I have now replaced all the wing linkages and am looking forward to the next series of flights.

Always wanted one of these when they came out three manufacturers ago, Nexa Twin Otter in Nature Air Livery. She looks beautiful in the air and very stable. I am looking forward to putting her on floats this spring. Definately need an easier wing bolt mount as it is a pain to fit my big meat fists through that opening. I ended up drilling and tapping the wing tube and used 8-32 nylon screws, works perfect. Motors were the recommended with MAS 11x7x3 props. Used the ME262 ESCs and Futaba servos all around, even the micros. Thank you Motion for carrying this beautiful plane!
