I ordered the Eagle Claw Cufflinks with Onyx Ball. This was my first order from Fort Belvedere. It will not be my last. Read on to find out why. The problem that I had was that I was invited to a black-tie dinner while travelling and did not have my usual outfit with me. Additionally, while it is easy to find uninspiring and pedestrian cufflinks it is very difficult to find tasteful and elegant ones, especially at short notice. I saw the eagle claw cufflinks on the Fort Belvedere website and, believing very strongly that if one is going to do black tie one should do it properly, was drawn to the onyx ball as better than anything I could find even in the high-end stores around me. I was a little concerned, however, that the balls might be a bit too bulbous and stick out inelegantly. Nevertheless, as nothing in the stores persuaded me and time was running out, I took the plunge and placed my order with Fort Belvedere. When the products arrived the first thing that was noticeable was the attractive and well thought out presentation. I have lived and worked in Japan for many years where a premium is placed on presentation and my standards have risen accordingly. Even so I was pleasantly surprised by what I received. The outer box, in Fort Belvedere green with silver lettering was sturdy, well made and attractive. The inner box containing the cufflinks was similarly attractive and well made, though grey with delicate silver flecks and lettering in gold on the outside and black velour inside; this later showed off the cufflinks to advantage. Both boxes are sufficiently attractive that I have kept them for storage. Additionally, for padding to stop the inner box from sliding around inside the outer one, instead of the all-too-common bubble wrap or crushed paper was a light mesh-like sheet of artificial fibre that was flexible enough to adapt to the space in the box yet rigid enough to serve its purpose of cushioning the inner box and stop it from moving. To be honest, this sort of attention to detail was not something that I had expected from a non-Japanese company. The cufflinks themselves are simultaneously beautiful and masculine. My concern that the balls might be too bulbous was unfounded and they worked perfectly at the cuff of my jacket, and gave a pleasing three-dimensional aspect unusual in cufflinks. They drew appreciative glances and comments from my dinner companions. Also, true to their description on the Fort Belvedere website, these cufflinks are not flimsy things but have an agreeable heft and solidity all too rare nowadays. My wife has a very well-developed and knowledgeable taste and aesthetic sense. In addition, she is Japanese and has the high standards of the fussy consumers of this country. Fortunately for me, she is not a spendthrift. She watches the pennies, but is prepared to pay an appropriate amount (but not more!) for quality. She immediately appreciated the quality of the product and particularly liked the eagle-claw design, which was new to her, as both sophisticated and unmistakably manly. She also agreed with me that I might buy more items from Fort Belvedere. In short, I have been persuaded that Fort Belvedere is a quality operation. I am considering buying more from them.

My wife claims they look not so much like eagle claws, more like feet of a bonsai chicken, but what does she know.... I love them!
