“Was satisfied with the natural boost of energy I got before doing a 25km ride, but the taste was just not what I had expected or hoped for… had some weird type of tangy flavour to it which I wouldn’t except from a honey gel, let alone a cinnamon bun flavoured honey gel… i let a teammate try a bit of it and he found the same odd tangy flavour. I can see how this would be good and I wished it had tasted better because my cycling team has been looking for a new gel to purchase regularly and given how much it helped my performance without giving me a sore stomach i was hopeful, but the flavour just threw us off. Maybe I got a bad batch but just unfortunate.”
“I quite enjoy the taste of this flavour gel. I honestly think it reminds me of a real cinnamon bun from cinnabon. The only thing i didn't like is it felt a bit thick and a tad too sweet for me even though it made me think of a cinnabon its not perfect. The consistancy is a bit thick, i wish it was a bit more viscous and fluid.”
“I'm training for my first marathon and I ran across Sun River on Instagram and I wanted to support Canadian. These gels are great, compact, energy gels for in-race fueling for my training. No issues at all. These are my go to.”
“Personally have tried many types of gels, this got me excited because of what it is, where it’s sourced, the story, etc. That aside, full disclosure, I am not ‘picky’ to taste or consistency of gels, I’m lucky to be able to get away with often the ‘cheapest’ options for the sport I’m doing - mid to long distance running.
My thoughts on this gel is fairly neutral. 2.5/5 stars on a scale. Taste was ‘good’, honey with cinnamon bun which did not taste artificial. I found the consistency too thick for my liking. My biggest criticism was the size of the packaging and difficulty to open it. The packaging felt too big and bulky and I’m not sure how well I’d enjoy packing these around on a race especially with the difficulty opening it.
If the packaging were to be made easier to open, I’d still find the consistency a little thick. If you were to ask me about value knowing that this would be considered more ‘premium’ than big brands, I’d put it at around $2.69-2.79/gel.
However, at the price point of Honey Stinger (24 for $69.99) my preference would be to go with the latter: taste, consistency, packaging, intended use being used to measure ‘value’.
If it were at a lower price point, I may still go with other options like GU (2.03-2.50/serving) or Kronos maple syrup base (2.49/serving).”
