“A new 2107 version of the bike. Its a really great fun liuttle dirt bike with enough poke to keep up in traffic but definitely not a speed machine. It looks the part and being quite a tall seat height, is great for someone like me at around 6ft tall.”

“For its intended purpose, and for the money, you'd be extremely hard-pressed to find a better option. It's a dual sport, so accept that it's a compromise. It's no KTM exc off road, and it won't run with the big sports bikes on a Sunday, but what it will do is get you comfortably from A to B all week for a couple of quid, and take you off the beaten track whenever you feel the inclination. Build quality is good, reliability is excellent and you should expect to see around 70 mpg if ridden enthusiastically. In stock form the CRF is second nature to ride, handles well on the road and can cope with easy trails, green lanes and such. For beginners, and those returning to trail riding after a long lay off, it's ideal, but be warned: the more you ride it, the faster you'll want to go and the stock suspension isn't up to it. There's a reason this bike is a good grand or so less than Yamaha's WR 250R (the nearest comparable dual sport in this class); with no adjustable damping front or rear, anyone looking to get more from the CRF off road will eventually need to upgrade. Fortunately, there are companies like Hagon, Hyperpro, YSS and Racetech who can supply shocks, springs and valving tailored to suit your weight and riding style. Plenty of performance mods are available and since the model has been out for few years now, there are loads of spares, aftermarket support and a great CRF 'community' online...
Bottom line: it's a cheap trail bike with all the compromises one would expect, but in terms of smiles per gallon, the CRF is up there with the best of them. Steph Jeavons is riding hers around the world; Patrick Trahan is rallying his in the dunes of Morrocco; I'm just nipping to the shops on mine...who knows where I'll decide to go this weekend. No shortage of options with this bike...”
