looks stunning , great torquey motor & more power than is truly necessary on the road & so much more fun than should be expected for just a few grand - if i spent more cash i wouldn't have a bigger smile each time i rode - just less cash in my pocket :-)

My 1999 YZF-R1 has covered over 74,000 miles. It has needed a new radiator and the forks re-chroming but apart from that it has required very little maintenance. The valve clearances have been checked but never adjusted. It has just had one new set of rear brake pads. The sprockets are original and the chain has been replaced just once. It is fast enough for all but the lunatic fringe. The front wheel bearings have been replaced but the rear ones are original. It is the best bike I've ever owned and I've had a Laverda Jota and a GSXR1100g.

The R1 5jj is a modern classic and now a reasonable ownership price. The bike has a good power and yet 16 years old still can keep with up to date bikes. Not all is well, with it being older there is little on the gadget front but you have got to ask do you need them? Yamaha know how to make a bike look fast even standing still the R1 looks like it's doing a ton. The handling is the key to the R1 with its low centre of gravity the bike can negotiate any bend and the torque from the engine means you can punch out of the corners quick without delay. Overall the bike is a top notch classic in my eyes.
