The 2007/8 4c8 R1 was the last of the regular 16v inline four R1's Yamaha made. The 2009 R1 saw the introduction of the cross-plane crank 'Big Bang' engine which they still use today. Replacing the 2004-6 R1, the 4c8 claimed increased midrange and torque over the previous model but compared to say an RSV4 or even a 2008 onwards Fireblade, the R1 is still a rev hungry screamer. It seems to lack big bike power in the lower revs which makes it a pussycat around town but get those revs above 8000rpm and the bike transforms into a howling banshee which moves at a surprising rate. This just means you need to work the gearbox much more than your mate on his S1000RR but keep it in the sweet spot and it will keep with anything out there today. Still one of the most beautiful sportsbikes ever to come out of Japan and reliability is excellent. Just look out for an abused gearbox which feels notchy and clunky as all those high rev gear changes can wear it out. Used prices are good with an immaculate low mileage dealer example going for around £5750 to a decent, average mileage private example selling for £3500. Go for one somewhere in the middle for a great buy.

2008, best looking nose of the all think. Strong, reliable lighter and smaller than initially thought. A 5'7" 14 stone torso fitted like a dream. controlled acceleration brings a big smile, cornering easier than expected. Can see it wouldn't suit a heavy handed rider though my girly wrist & R1 throttle work well apart from tight/small islands which is a little twitchy. Only downside is no fuel gauge, which when enjoying the ride it's easy to forget fuel may be low. A poo poo widow maker ended up being my dream bike. Dark grey & gold is a head turner.
