“I have had BMW bikes for 35 years and enjoyed all of them. This bike is by far the best it is fast enough to cover long distances and I am still able to walk when I get off. I have ridden to France on it a number of times and it has not let me down. A very good bike for both long and short rides”
“I bought my 1992 K1100LT from a friend 5 years ago for only £500 with 49000 miles on the clock. I have since only put on another 10000 miles but, these have mostly been hassle free.
I regularly get 55mpg no matter how I ride and the massive fairing(best ever since the R100RS) keeps off the worst of the weather as long as I am moving...
The original K+Q seat is comfy (for the passenger) but, I can't move around and get cramped very quickly so I replaced it with one off my old K100-it fitted straight on with a bit of judicious force but, is much better and I can easily go for 150 miles with no problems.
When the Metzelers it came with needed changed I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Activ items on a recommendation by a mate. What a transformation ! Up to then I would have insisted on Metz but, now I'm a convert - the Michelins are simply the best tyres I have ever used and I can highly recommend them-they suit the bike really well and at £120 front and £140 rear aren't too expensive.
Each year it sails through the MOT apart from once when a fork seal needed replaced-which I did myself with little hassle.
Small niggles - the ignition kept cutting out on tight left handers. This was traced to the ignition cable which comes out of the bottom of the ignition switch and is badly routed under the tank, which stressed the internals which fell apart. BMW wanted £75 for a new one (4 wires and a bit of metal) . I bypassed it using wire and switches from Halfords for about £5.
The only other thing that has gone wrong is the (original) starter motor which packed up suddenly but, was replaced by a used one for £90 (£350 new !!!!!!)
So would I buy another one ? Yes but, I don't need to - this one is just about run in and should go to 150000+ if looked after.
If you can find one go for it - the build quality is goo(much better than the new R's) and is much overlooked. For myself I have always loved the flying brick and plan to keep this one going as long as I can.
