Fine Woodworking on Hand Tools Now back in print! To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Fine Woodworking , the Taunton Press is re-releasing a number of classic titles from the early days of the magazine. Long out of print, the books are filled with expert information that's as timeless now as when it was first published. Sophisticated new power tools come and go, but fundamental wood-working skill begins and ends with hand tools. No matter how clever you are with jigs for the radial-arm saw or router, you almost always come back to planes, chisels, and saws for some aspect of the job. This volume of 38 articles from Fine Woodworking magazine offers a wealth of information on all phases of hand-tool use, from basic sawing and chiseling to understanding the finer points of how a plane cuts and why it leaves a shimmery surface you cant get with sandpaper. This book was originally released by Taunton Press in 1986 and then reissued in 2015. It is part of an 80's series called "Fine Woodworking On" and as far as I'm aware there are 21 volumes to date (but only 7 were added to or re-released in 2015). Each book volume covers a general topic in WW (such as "Hand Tools"). Within each book topic, Taunton Press has reprinted a collection of related articles, from their own "Fine Woodworking" magazine (38 for HT). These articles are chosen because they are amazing, rewarding, inciteful, ingenious and worthwhile to read. The articles typically offer a different perspective, that you're unlikely to find elsewhere and you'll covet what you've just learnt/discovered. This is even true for a book on hand tools, where you'd think there's nothing more to discuss on the subject, but this book has managed it. Once you've discovered the wealth in one of these volumes, you'll be compelled to want to find the rest of the series from somewhere; they're all valuable resources. Timberbits offers several of these volumes and they are an absolute must to collect (for all woodworkers). I'm now up to 20/21, with two volumes just bought from Timberbits.
