620 - PNG Rosewood (Pterocarpus Indicus) The trade name for this timber in Australia is PNG Rosewood. It is also commonly known as Amboyna and Narra. Some reports say that the name amboyna only applies to the veneer made from the burl. A rare, exotic hardwood that grows in Southeast Asia and has a fragrant aroma. It can vary in color from yellow to golden brown to red, and is generally considered excellent for both turning and finishing. This timber is beautiful to turn and sand. Although the grain can be a bit cranky it machines extremely well. It is also very stable so tends to behave when sawn down to smaller boards. Rosewood routs and sands very well and takes any kind of finish you want to put on it. Size is 18mm x 18mm x 120mm. The pen blanks are dry, they are not enclosed in wax.
