“The hydraulic cylinder is so short that it would only allow it to move the thumb a few degrees. I had to order a new cylinder with a longer stroke. Waiting for it to arrive. At least once I get it all together I may have a good template to use if I need to beef it up. The hoses will at least be used to hook up the new cylinder. Would be nice to offer the setup with different cylinder or no cylinder.”

“After we spent more money welding the thumb onto the excavator than what it costs - I removed it after the first day. First, the hydraulic ram does not have enough travel to allow the thumb to pick up anything unless you bring the bucket all the way to it! Then the thumb in the retracted position does not allow the bucket to move to the arm enough to be effective. I think the thumb would need to be attached via the pin with a long enough piston to allow much more movement. Quality gets 5 stars, Service gets 5 stars. Usefulness gets 1 star. Basically, I just wasted $500 and a full day!”

“If you are looking for something to grab twigs with occasionally it's great, if you are wanting to lift a tree or use this more often than not then I suggest get fabricating. The metal thickness is too thin for where the pins go in, I suggest welding some DOM on each pinhole to prevent egging out, hydraulic ram is underpowered for the size of bucket that operates in conjunction with a thumb this size. Also, the ram will not pull the thumb completely back out of the way due to its size in nature. Now for the price you pay for what you get it's great, it's a starting point if you know a thing or two about welding and have been around heavy machinery you can make this thumb more powerful, more versatile, last longer and useful or if you want to use it as a stencil to make a larger one or add on.”
