Backhoe and Fronthoe Thumb for Excavator Reviews

4.6 Rating 50 Reviews
Read Titan Attachments Reviews

The Mechanical Thumb for a Backhoe or Fronthoe attaches to the boom frame and has five possible positions to help stabilize materials that are hard to control. Simply fold it back or slide it away when not in use.

Please measure your bucket before ordering to ensure a proper match. A mismatched thumb will damage your backhoe, as larger backhoes have more bucket force. For example: if you mount a 25" thumb on a hoe that requires a 31", you will probably bend or break your equipment. Ensure that this thumb is at least the length of your bucket when measured from boom to the teeth, or the warranty may void if damage occurs.

The Titan Fronthoe Thumb is easy to assemble and install on the Fronthoe arm, though the instructions lack detail on the exact mounting location. Once installed, it works well for a non-adjustable thumb—the bucket provides all of the movement. I’ve successfully used it to pick up logs and grab various items, though I haven’t yet tested it lifting a large rock. One limitation is the side clamping plates. Under strong bucket force, the thumb can slide back along the arm, as the plates don’t hold it in place as securely as they could. A more positive locating feature would be a worthwhile improvement. There are also some hardware issues. The side plates are punched for five bolts, but only four bolts are provided. In addition, the supplied bolts and heavy-duty locking nuts are too long, which prevents the thumb from folding back flush into its intended storage position. I resolved this by replacing two M12 x 1.75 x 115 mm bolts with 110 mm bolts and thinner locking nuts (see picture). This allowed the thumb to fold back properly and also let me use all five punched holes to secure the plate more effectively. Overall, despite these shortcomings, the thumb functions well for its intended purpose. I would rate its functionality at 4 out of 5 stars.

Good heavy duty item that is easy to install. I installed mine on the Titan backhoe. It wants to slide back away form the bucket when used. You cannot tigthen the bolts enough to prevent it getting out of adjustment about everytime you use it. Some suggest welding the bracket to the hoe. I drilled two 1/2" holes in the hoe arm where there were already some unused 1/2" holes in the bracked and installed another 1/2" bolt there and another one in a set of holes that were already there lower on the bracket and should have had a bolt with it. So far that seems to have solved the promlem and I don't think it should have weekend the main arm. Not everyone can weld and you would have to take the entire impliment to a welder if you cannot weld. If this works I will be happy with the hoe and the grapple.

As is it would not fit my 385a. But the price with the sales reduction was too good to lose. I modified it to fit my backhoe and am pleased with it.
