Modix BIG-180X is a professional and industrial-grade self-assembly FDM/FFF 3D printer kit produced by Modix — an Israeli-based company renowned for the production of powerful large-format machines. The BIG-180X is one of the latest additions to the company’s lineup. Aside from an outstanding build volume of 1800 x 600 x 600 mm, the printer offers a handful of other truly useful features. For instance, it has a 100 probing points automatic bed leveling system, filament run-out sensor, dual-zone silicone heater to adjust the print bed heating, and can be equipped with a secondary print head. In addition, it offers a PEI print surface that provides ultimate layer adhesion and ensures hassle-free print removal.

It took me around 3 weeks to mount everything together and start up the printer. We started with some small calibration prints, they were bad, but after some fine-tuning in Simplify3D and checking if anything within the assembly was still loose, they started to get better. With larger prints the major problem was bed leveling. The calibration works across 300 points, one full round of calibration takes around 35 minutes. In other words, it takes much more time when compared to our smaller 3D printers. After several rounds of calibration and playing with the heatmap, we managed to get it right. Never have we felt so relieved:) The prints are super nice, and we print across the entire build volume of the machine. We calibrate the machine before every single print, but now the fine tuning itself doesn't take too long, and it's totally worth it since I would be much more disappointed with failing a 4-day print than spending some extra time on making sure the bed is level. We also upgraded to the Supervolcano with a 1mm nozzle. Saw a nice boost in speed on some prints, but I'm still testing it. Not ready to tell yet if I love it or if I'll just stick with the Volcano. Takoto has also been getting some love recently. Overall, our 180 is a beast. I'd definitely recommend it to the folks in the automotive / racing space, but only if you have the skills and desire to assemble and maintain it. P. S. I should also mention that there used to be an annoying problem with full-length prints. The PTFE tube used to get tangled on the carriage, failing the print. But as of now, Modix shipped a free upgrade to us to mitigate that, and we haven't had any substantial issues since then.

Our modix big 180 has been in heavy use for around 4 months. It takes some heavy lifting, but every 3D printer I've owned does. Calibration, connecting to Wi-Fi, making sure filament smoothly goes through the tube, replacing failed bearings on the extruders are some of the challenges that we had to deal with, but for what it's worth, big 180 is a great solution for our business.

No complaints, modix support is very responsive and goes into a lot of detail on any issues our engineers have had. Assembly and calibration was laborious, but after we got past that, most of the issues we had were rather 3D printing related, not so much with the actual machine itself. For example, it took us a lot of trial and error to figure out why the extrusion will miss 5mm-10mm of a new line after a travel move before new material starts to hit the plate. I tried a number of things in Cura, including totally removing retraction to maintain nozzle pressure after a travel move but it still did it anyway. Lazar recommended switching off the combing mode in Cura and instantly solved the issue.
