I am careful to follow instructions, and read them through so as not to mess up... however, the transfer of the pattern to the felt just didn't happen..there were a few smudgy black marks, but nothing resembling the required/desired pattern.

So sorry if this has not been quite as it should - that is disappointing indeed. It sounds like a production fault. My colleague has been in touch with the designer / supplier Nancy for you who is going to send replacement.
