TVP is one of the original fake meats. Bob's Red Mill TVP is a vegan / vegetarian meat substitute made from reduced-fat soy beans. Each serving contains 12g of protein! A great replacement for ground meat in almost any recipe.
“Okay, I tried tvp 20 years ago and found it to be a poor substitute for ground beef, but now 20 years later with much better cooking skills, and the Internet, I can't tell much difference between my tvp taco meat and ground beef/cow. I reconstituted 1 cup TVP in No Chicken broth (would have used no "beef" but didn't have it) and a Tbsp of vegan Worcestershire sauce, fried cumin seeds in oil for about 30 seconds, added 1/2 onion and fried until brown, added in 3 large cloves of fresh minced garlic and stirred for a few minutes, added 2 generous tsp of freshly ground cumin and fried for a few seconds, added reconstituted TVP and fried until brown, stirring continuously so as not to burn. I added another Tbsp of oil (for a total of about 3 Tbsp), this time garlic flavored olive oil, because my TVP looked dry and started to stick. After brown, I added a package of vegan taco seasoning along with a little water and stirred for 5 minutes. Yum!”
“I used this product in my chili, sauces, tacos, lasagna, meat pies and more. I usually get about three meals from each bag--which makes it a real bargain.”
