I expected more - and probably got a less than perfect pair The design of the tassel loafers is convincing, they look good and are an eye-catcher. Because of this and especially because of the extensive history of GH Bass to the beginnings of the loafers we know today, I decided to buy them here. Unfortunately, the idea and expectation no longer match the actual products. Expectation & Quality: Little can be said about the quality of the leather, as it is unfortunately coated. Although this provides a shiny touch, it prevents the leather from developing a real patina over time, making it soft and easy to care for. As soon as the coating is scratched, which happens easily, or it becomes brittle over time, that's probably it. The leather sole with the rubber heel and the general finish (stitching) is good. Sizing (Problems) & Construction: When determining the size of loafers, I often have the problem of finding the right fit. I used the AI sizing assistant as a guide and took a size smaller than most (lace-up shoes). The shoe doesn't quite fit flush at the heel, there is a small gap. I hoped that this would diminish over time as the leather would soften and mould to the foot. However, this area is extra reinforced (good in principle), but ensures that this doesn't happen and remains hard and a little wide. This also makes it impossible to wear this shoe barefoot over a medium distance. On the other hand, the toe box at the front is very narrow, even for someone who doesn't have wide feet. Defects on my pair when unpacking: Unfortunately, my pair was scratched at the back and partially on the side as soon as I unpacked them. I first tried to polish this out, the scratches were less prominent but remained (see attached picture). As described above, scratches will automatically appear in the coating with use, but a new product should not have this anyway. Brand: I realise that every brand and range of items has to fit into some category (price and quality). However, for 230 euros and the rich heritage of GH Bass, I expected more than the experience described above. It seems that GH Bass, like Doc Martens, has gone with the flow of the times, focussing on mass production, trend and sometimes compromising on quality and buyer experience, which is not the case with other brands in this price segment. Nevertheless, it can be said that you basically get a solid and very good-looking shoe. However, you should clearly realise what you are being offered and not what is associated with the brand. Perhaps I will be convinced otherwise in the future. Best regards, Ben!
