“I have had problems on my motorhome (Merc Sprinter based) for ever with the installed VSR. It's threshold was too high for the Smart Alternator if the main battery was not under load and would not kick in until it reached 13.7v. As well, it didn;t have a manual override.
The Kickass 13.2 - 12.8 is the answer and works well detecting both directions.
Because they bury this gear under seating in relly awkward places, when fitting the kickass I took advantage of putting in the remaote switch and relay monitor LED as well as digital display for both batteries.
