Definitely no complaints about this rod. I got it for kayak trolling for CA halibut and use it alongside an Okuma PCH. Both have narrow butts and fit in, and come out of, the rod holders really well. I actually got this Proteus because I was sick of how often my Daiwa VIP Saltwater’s thicker butt got stuck in my Scottys when I had a bite. I do like this rod, and definitely like it more than the VIP Saltwater, which is an absolutely solid boat rod, but I don’t like it as much as the Okuma PCH. The Proteus is stiffer, and it’s much truer to its fast action, whereas the PCH’s springiness and more mod-fast action (even though it’s advertised as fast) makes it easier to tell when my trolling rig is moving right, and not tangled, and when it’s getting bit, trolling or bait fishing. However, were I targeting tuna or WSB, I might prefer the Proteus’ beefiness. And, as with many of my Okuma/Daiwa comparisons, while I might prefer the Okuma while it’s working, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Daiwa survives the wear and tear of fishing longer.
