“Beautiful bird but did NOT like being cooped up. Iridescent black that looked green in the sunlight. If you need birds that can take care of themselves this one is for you!
I got a Black Sumatra with a Rare breeds assortment years ago, I knew what she was very quickly as she was pretty obvious even as a chick with her facial markings and when her feathers started coming in jet black. As a young bird she was like a black crow in my hen house--very cool bird but not a bird that wanted to be contained! Even putting a netting over my run she still managed to get out of it on days she didn't want to be cooped up (normally days I wasn't home to keep an ear out for danger.) She escaped repeatedly and for several years she actually hung out in the trees and bushes, and on the fence and...anywhere but IN The coop! She loved to sit in one of the trees in the yard and sometimes the roosters would mistake her for a threat and start yelling which was hilarious. I think she liked to freak them out on purpose, she was a very decent flyer for a chicken! On several occasions I saw the family of Crows that like to get corn from my flock sit in the tree near her and stare at her like the couldn't figure out why she didn't fly away with them!
One day I thought something had finally eaten her because I couldn't find her and my heart broke, I knew it was inevitable since she refused to remain in a safe space but she was so good at flying and hiding half the time I couldn't find her, I was still shocked something had gotten her. When I went to check the spot under the shed a few days later where some of my hens liked to occasionally hide eggs one night I nearly had a heart attack--She was sitting under there and she had been hiding a nest WITH CHICKS! She was a fantastic mother, she free ranged those babies and it was so cute to see her running through the yard with her little jet black chicks running after her! She was eventually eaten by a hawk sadly a few months later, but I still have three of her daughters in my adult flock and while they remind me of her with their dark skin and little combs they are heavier birds like their Olive Egger daddy and DO come home to roost and even lay in the nest boxes.
I would absolutely get one of these birds again--but I now have a solid roof on my run so I think it would be a little easier to contain one! Free Ranging and predator evasion abilities A+ for this breed, ability to raise chicks and keep them alive running through a yard with a bunch of other breeds all bigger than she was, AA+. She didn't eat much pellet because she was too busy foraging, and she did lay a very good number of small to medium white eggs...if you could find them! LOL So feed to egg conversion ratio was fantastic! Everyone is obsessed with the Cemani, these gorgeous little black crow chickens don't get enough love!!”
We were so very sorry to hear about the late losses you experienced from your order! We know it is absolutely heartbreaking! As discussed after your report, we are looking forward to hearing back from you in an effort to determine what may have happened. Again, you have our sincere sympathy.
“We ordered one Black Sumatra female and she was very cute. She was alert and peeped constantly and loudly, but we noticed she wasn’t growing like the other chicks in our order and toward the end of the first week she died. Adorable though, so if my kid who chose it wanted to try again I would consider including one in a future order.”
“These gals are beautiful and unique looking. I got 2 and the don’t get along with the rest of my flock. They are also very broody. It is an ongoing battle to keep them off the nest. They are not abundant egg layers either.”
Thank you Carol for leaving a review of your Black Sumatra chickens. They are gorgeous and are kept mostly for ornamental purposes. We are so sorry to hear they don't get along with the rest of your flock! We will email you with some tips on how to break a broody hen.
“I’ve ordered many times from MPC and have always been very pleased with their chicks and goslings.
Never lost a chick until the Sumatras. I got four females and two males. Within two days I was down to three and those three will be 4 weeks old tomorrow and are doing great. Don’t have a clue what happened to the other three and don’t know what sexes they were.
Overall very pleased with MPC though.”
William, thank you for leaving a review on your Black Sumatra chicks. We are very sorry to hear that you lost 3 of your chicks! We will reach out to you directly in regards to your losses.
