“I was so excited to finally add this beautiful chick to my flock. The chicks arrived quickly and were healthy and active. As the Lavender Dream grew, I noted at about 6 weeks that her feathers were a bit unusual looking - rough and messy, not lying flat, but not a frizzle. I realized that she has the shredder gene and it resulted in the feathering issue. I am so disappointed. It is difficult when you have a small flock to add a bird that isn't what you expected and paid a premium for. Additionally, the shredded feathers cause flight issues, so she can't roost with the rest of the flock and will mean she needs additional heat in winter as the feathers don't trap body heat as well. I contacted My Pet Chicken and was told that the shredding is common in lavenders, not a health issue, so not a defect they will refund or otherwise address. Not a positive experience for me. Buyer beware.”

The “shredder” feathering is a known trait associated with the lavender gene, and unfortunately, the way it presents can vary from bird to bird. “Now, I just received my girls, including this one, 5 days ago. This little one, now named Peanut was quite tiny and did arrive not in great shape. The other 5 were just fine. After dipping her beak in water and putting her under the brooding plate she was still quite lethargic. So (even though I've read you only have to do it once,) I helped her with the water again and left her next to the waterer. (She almost climbed in at that point) and drank heavily. By the next day....perfect. I also know this company has the best customer support. I'm grateful Peanut is a fighter. The only place I will buy my little ones from.”

“We named this sweet girl Gengar (from Pokemon) and she had a mild case of straddle leg, but with 24 hours in a brace she has been good as new for 2 weeks! She is very friendly, and jumps up daily for pets! Her cute little cheeks help us tell her apart from our Lavender orpington, but from behind they look IDENTICAL! She is a very curious chick, very confident, and doesn't pick on any of the other chicks (we have 13 in a brooder).”
