“We've gotten a few batches of chicks from My Pet Chicken. Unfortunately one came down with Marek's despite being vaccinated. She was a beautiful, sweet girl and only a few months old. We spent hundreds of dollars on veterinary bills trying to help her only to learn there was nothing we could do. My daughter, who LOVED that hen, was absolutely devastated. That said, the rest of our chicks have been fine and we did end up ordering from My Pet Chicken again because the chicks have otherwise been healthy with great dispositions. Just wish these vaccinations were more reliable.”
We are so very sorry to hear about your hen! We know it must be heartbreaking, especially for your daughter! While the Marek's vaccination will mostly protect chickens from the symptoms of the disease, a small percentage may still get sick with Marek's even though vaccinated. To use an analogy, it is the same concept as a flu vaccination for humans, it protects against most strains but unfortunately, some will still come down with the virus. As always, if you think your chicken is sick, you will want to contact a veterinarian to get a firm diagnosis and treatment options. Again, we are so very sorry for your loss.
