Baby Chicks: Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock Female Reviews

4.6 Rating 19 Reviews
I thought she'd be like the barred plymouth rocks, I had read they were able to handle warmer climates. Unfortunately this girl is so fluffy, she's the first to start panting when it gets a little warm out. Really concerned she'll end up dying of heat stroke even with all the things I do to cool off the run- between the shade and the cold water and cold treats, she's always panting. She's low on the pecking order, but she does like to come over to me and talk to me. I'm not sure what she's trying to say, but I imagine she is complaining to the management about how hot it is. Or how the other girls wouldn't let her at the snacks. I think this breed would be better suited to colder climates. I wouldn't get it again since I live in Florida. But so so so pretty and soft.

I purchased 8 chicks of various breeds last summer, one of which was a silver penciled plymouth rock. She was actually chosen almost at random to round out the order as I needed another brown egg layer and was trying to choose attractive birds. The picture here and the few I could locate off-site were not impressive, but I took a chance. 'Lo and behold, Priscilla is absolutely gorgeous! She's not the friendliest nor the least friendly of the flock, but she is calm and sweet and will readily come for treats. I have enough hens laying that it is difficult to tell how well she is laying individually, but overall I've been pleasantly surprised. The picture doesn't do the breed justice. Side note-as a chick, she was absolutely zany to look at with a zig-zag mark on the head. Hilarious, especially since she seems almost dignified as an adult hen.

Babies are doing great and they are becoming beautiful, docile, friendly little pullets. Enjoying them very much!
