“Gilda is so beautiful, so friendly and sooo broody!! I love her. She is six months old now and lays a beautiful small blue egg so far. The problem is she's so young and has already gone broody twice! This is not ideal for me as we have no roosters or plans for babies. Otherwise, she's a delight and as beautiful as you describe. She has tons of personality except for when she flattens herself out and growls at me. Thankfully she never pecks. I wish I would have known that this breed tends to go broody, or do they? Is this an anomaly? If not, perhaps you should mention this in your description. Thx.”

Ameraucana hens are not known for going broody often. In fact, they tend to be on the less broody side compared to other breeds like Silkies, Cochins, or Orpingtons. Most Ameraucana keepers report that their hens prefer to just keep laying those beautiful blue eggs rather than sitting on them!
That said, broodiness can always vary a bit from bird to bird. Occasionally, you might get an Ameraucana hen who bucks the trend and decides she’s ready for motherhood—but it’s not something to expect as a regular behavior from the breed.
If you’re looking for dependable layers without frequent interruptions from broodiness, Ameraucanas are a solid choice. And if you're hoping for a broody hen to hatch chicks, they might not be your go-to gals—but they sure do bring a lot of charm and color to any flock! “I ordered 2 blue splash Ameraucanas late last summer. They are absolutely stunning birds! Honestly, this group of chicks from MPC are some of the prettiest I’ve ever had, and as always, they arrived healthy and have thrived. They just started laying lovely blue eggs. Stilton is the top hen out of this batch of birds and her splash sister Roquefort close to 2nd. Roquefort is my curious, nosey girl who had to be in the middle of everything. Stilton is lighter, almost a lavender splash and Roquefort a lovely slate-blue splash. So pretty, but such great personalities and they are laying quite well for new layers!
