Love our Sussex! Her name is Zinnia, and she's very smart and social. Bit of an escape artist, too. Will sometimes just follow me, being a nosy busybody. Highly recommend!

Thank you so much for the lovely review, Kate! Zinnia sounds like an absolute delight — curious, clever, and always wanting to be part of the action. It’s fun to hear how social and engaged she is. We’re so glad she’s such a great fit for your flock, and we truly appreciate the recommendation!

A good healthy bird! Great for a first time chicken owner. We ordered 3 in the mix of 15. One of them turned out to be a roo that started crowing at 16 weeks. We had to give him away and I was so sad about it. He’s living his best life free ranging with a flock of 12 hens now. If you get a speckled sussex roo, the one we had was amazing and I would have kept him if I didn’t live in the city. He was great with the girls. Always letting them eat first and he would clean up after them. They listened to him when I let them all free range. He made sure they were all in the coop first every night. He was a good leader. The hens we have are calm, quiet, and friendly. They don’t let us pick them up, but they are great birds.

Thank you so much for sharing such a heartfelt and detailed review! We’re glad to hear your Speckled Sussex has been a healthy bird and a great fit for a first-time chicken owner. While we understand how disappointing it is when one turns out to be a rooster, it truly sounds like he was an exceptional one — a respectful leader and a wonderful gentleman to his flock. We’re happy to hear he’s now living his best life free ranging with plenty of hens, even though saying goodbye was hard. We also appreciate your kind words about the hens you’ve kept — calm, quiet, and friendly birds are exactly what Speckled Sussex are known for. We’ve reached out by email with information on our sexing guarantee, and we’re always happy to help when situations like this arise. Thank you again for your understanding, your thoughtful perspective, and for giving your birds such a great home.

The order of mixed chicks arrived safe and healthy. They have been an easy group to care for. Our Speckled Sussex "Ivy" is in charge of the flock. She's very pretty, hardy and opinionated. As a chick, she was the only one who didn't grow in any tail feathers. She's 5 months old now and still only has about 3 tail feathers, but her body feathering is the standard, beautiful coloring of her breed. She hangs out with our Swedish Flower hen, who looks very similar to her, but black. They are 1 & 2 in the pecking order, and also the most intelligent.

What a wonderful update — thank you so much for sharing! We're thrilled to hear your chicks arrived healthy and have been so easy to care for. It sounds like Ivy has a big personality and is living up to the Speckled Sussex reputation for being both beautiful and full of character! It’s always fun to see how flock dynamics develop — we love that she and your Swedish Flower Hen have become best friends and leaders of the group. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience — it truly makes our day to hear how well your girls are doing!

I love the Speckled Sussex chicks and wish I had ordered more! They’re very docile and get along well with the rest of the flock, and don’t mind being handled at all by me or my kids.

What beautiful pictures! The Speckled Sussex is a very popular breed since they are so friendly and absolutely stunning to look at! The speckles get even more patterned with every molt, helping them hide from predators but just making them even more stunning! We are glad you love them!

Our two Speckled Sussex's are SOOOOOOO sweet! They come running when they see you, always the first to get to you. Our Harriett comes to the house everyday so she can get special treats. We love our girls but Harriette & Henrietta are the absolute BEST!!!!

Oh my goodness—Harriett and Henrietta sound like absolute treasures! Speckled Sussex girls really do have a way of stealing hearts with their friendly, curious personalities, and it sounds like yours are living their best lives (especially Harriett with those special house visits and treats!). We love hearing how bonded they are to you—that kind of connection is what makes keeping chickens so special. Thank you so much for sharing your sweet story with us. Give those girls some extra treats and scritches from all of us here at My Pet Chicken!

The Speckled Sussex is easily one of my favorite breed of chickens. Freckles is smart, friendly, and cuddly. She is a cheerful layer who will follow you all over the yard. Solid bird that no flock should be without. Get a Sussex!
