“I love my speckled Sussex, Lizzie. I ordered green Queens and I ended up with one bantam and one regular green Queen. I also ended up with one rooster. I swore I wouldn't buy any more because they were the meanest chickens I'd ever had. We had to get rid of the rooster he was too mean. The blue bantam still rules most of the flock. The only ones she doesn't bother is my speckled Sussex and the other green Queen. Lizzie is the boss of all of them. She doesn't need to be mean at all. No one messes with her. I didn't order her but she is definitely a speckled Sussex. She follows me everywhere and I'm afraid she's going to get in trouble in the pasture. I'm constantly sending her back to the flock. She also is an escape artist. I let a hen sit on eggs and she was constantly in with them. She's also gotten into caged raised gardens. I absolutely love her and would get more if I had room. My only fear is that she's going to get into trouble because she's so curious about everything.”

It sounds like Lizzie has decided that being a Speckled Sussex comes with a very important job description: flock leader, garden inspector, broody hen supervisor and full time farm companion. “These chicks are adorable, friendly, bold, and curious. They arrived healthy, took to food and water quickly, and are the first to check out something new. When I come to the brooder, they are fast to greet me and love to get on my hand and use my arm as a perch. “She is very friendly, so I adore her but she does not have the best of genetics. She was born with a deformed beak. It doesn't prevent her from eating, luckily. She is ok. But I wish this company would focus on the quality of their chickens as I would keep ordering from here. I also ordered many cochins from here and they are no where near as large and beautiful as the ones I hatched from Ebay.”

Our breeding programs focus strongly on the overall health and temperament of our birds. While physical abnormalities are uncommon, they can occasionally occur in any breeding program.
