Baby Chicks: Welsummer Bantam Female Reviews

4.8 Rating 4 Reviews
We have 10 birds - 4 LF and 6 bantams. They are all almost a year old. The Welsummer bantam is by far the largest weighing in at 3 lbs 1 oz (or 49 oz). This is a lot more than the 30 oz weight given for hens in the description. For comparison, our Silked Easter Egger (which has smooth feathers) is only 3 ounces heavier. I don't really think of our Welsummer bantam as a true bantam. She also lays very light eggs, the color of a cochin egg, not the color of a large fowl Welsummer. As far as personality goes, she is great. Flighty but friendly. She loves perching on my husband's shoulder. She is the bottom of the pecking order. Still gave her 4 stars because she is healthy and friendly and that's what I care about most. But I'm writing this review because I wish I would have known about size and egg color before ordering. Perhaps she is just our special little oddball.

We've ordered dozens of chickens from MyPetChicken over the years - always with fantastic results. Last year we ordered one of these little Wellsummer bantams and she is my favorite hen! She's such a smart little thing! She forages well and is quite a survivor [she's survived the great racoon massacre of 2017 and a recent dog break-in attack]. She's a fun little thing to watch - so quick and lively! She's not really very tame or people friendly [she was raised by a broody hen, instead of by humans, that may be why], but she's such a clever little thing that I just love her! She also lays almost every single day and is one of our most reliable egg layers [and we have several of the "every day egg layer" types - orpingtons, leghorns, red stars, etc.] You really can't go wrong with these little hens!

We made our very first order of chicks through My Pet Chicken recently and we had an excellent experience. We ordered four Easter Egger Bantams, two White Crested Black Polish Bantams and two Welsummer Bantams. We ordered them a few months in advance. I had to make a change in the order a few weeks later and My Pet Chicken made the change without any problems or hassle. The chicks were sent out on the day My Pet Chicken said they would go out and arrived two days later. I was impressed in the quality of the packaging they were sent in. One chicken did not make it through the trip and a second did not make it past 24 hours. I had expected this as these were chicks and I understood they were fragile - and therefore I ordered a few more than I actually needed. My Pet Chicken did not give me any hassle in reporting the loss and refunded the amount I paid. Their customer service is great. I do need to place future orders and I am definitely using My Pet Chicken again. As to the Welsummer: As mentioned earlier, one did not make it. However, I did expect this just from the nature of shipping chicks. The one that did make it is doing great. She is still less than a week old, but so far so good!

I have a Standard Welsummer, she is a wonderful bird! These birds are beautiful, friendly, very smart and lay huge eggs. She communicates when there is an issue. I have Hand raised all my chickens just like my cats and dogs. Chickens, if paid attention to are as smart, if not smarter than some as cats and dogs FACT!! FYI Look up chicken intelligence.
