“Many thanks for the introduction to the school kits. I completed using the As I Saw it Kit just after lockdown. My video skills are useless so no footage to show you unfortunately. The unit was a success but I wish I'd had it to use at the start of the year when I look at early NZ history. It's perfect for that. I copied the card resources and used them to make small groups where each group could discuss, classify and think of questions. We were also looking at NZ Places by then so were able to bring in mapping skills to locate Mercury Bay and find out about Cook's route around NZ. The classification cards worked really well to promote discussion within the groups where the students were expected to justify statements and opinions. Two school journals were used to supplement your unit and provide additional reading resources. How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Sparked role play and situation hot seats (drama) that really made the tamariki thoughtful about their own challenges with social interactions and reinforced others' feelings and perspectives.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Makes me ponder how much we don't know as we have really only heard one side of stories for so long, really hope we get stories a bit like Sam Neill and his documentary series about Captain Cook!! Fascinating!!

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It helped somewhat but could have been improved by simplifying the lessons and making the teaching material more clear.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I am very motivated to teach NZ history and there were some good ideas here but the teaching material could be much more streamlined and easier to use.

“I found the kit to be visually beautiful, but much of the teaching material I found difficult for Year 7-8 students. It was not always clear how the material was to be used, and I found the teaching ideas often took too long or it was difficult to keep students attention.”

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I really enjoyed how this kit focused on the early arrival of the European and the interactions with the Maori. It was easy for the children to understand. Great resources and a fun way to teach it.

“Irirangi 3 throughly enjoyed working through the character scenarios and piecing the information together. Writing the story of the day about the objects was one of the highlights. Initially the children found this challenging but the end stories turned out well and they were all keen to share. We only had a few children who were ready to present for the Exhibition before the cut off for feedback to other school commitments.”

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has shown me a new perspective to teach history, that is, to consider the story from everyone's angle.

“This was an amazing kit. It served so many purposes. Students were able to learn about facts and opinions, New Zealand history, insights into how people may have different viewpoints and perspectives on an event, New Zealand geography, New Zealand culture and job occupations. Students were completely engaged with the learning.”

“An amazing look and insight into the history of our first explorers. A excellent exploration of Te Whanganui-a-hei, Mercury Bay. the students really enjoyed unpacking the narratives and perspectives from the people portrayed in the awesome set of cards the kit contained. All students thoroughly enjoyed searching for the objects and discovering the tasks and strengths of each of the 16 perspectives presented, while slowly recognising each held a different voice and story. The importance revealing -we all have a different lens in which we view the world surrounding us at a particular time or event and how these are recorded or preserved or shared with others.”

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? I reinforced this idea of always having an open mind to other peoples perspectives during this unit... it is an ongoing lesson with many students in their daily life when dealing with other students. A really good kit to reinforce this lesson. Thanks

I already have a pretty open perspective about teaching the history of NZ, I really enjoy discussing this with my students and learning about this topic myself. I have booked a class trip next term to Waitangi to visit the new digital unit they have built

“I felt a bit unsure on how to use this kit and how to introduce the characters. I liked the idea that was given to set the scene with a teacher stealing an item of mine and then the students giving evidence or retelling what they saw or remembered from this incident. I then got the idea from another teacher of the students writing from the perspective of the items in the kit. So a bit more direction or ideas would have been helpful to use this kit to its full potential.”

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Yes it has. By drilling down on one event and looking at it from a variety of perspectives was so powerful.
