How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The kit helped the students a lot. As mentioned, they especially enjoyed the practical tasks. They were fully entertained by the 'apple incident' right at the beginning of the unit whereby we staged the taking of an apple. 'Guess Who' game and 'collecti
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Yes. Resourcing is important for engaging and maintaining that throughout. Also, making connections is paramount, fortunately for us...being central to places where key events took place in the Bay of Islands was a really good advantage.
The kit was great-as are all School Squad kits. It was well resourced and user friendly for the students. The kit offered an interactive alternative for exploring the events and perspectives of the interactions between European and Maori. The students especially enjoyed the artefacts component of the unit. Thanks for the unit. As per usual, I did have difficulty with the plan and it takes a few goes to break it down further and understand it. Once I did that, it progressed well.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It made them more aware of multiple perspectives through the viewpoints of others and timings. They were able to link back to actual recounts (provided by myself) and get a better grasp of the varying views, opinions and treatment on others.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It definitely made teaching NZ history easier! I have a limited knowledge in this area and the resources and readings provided were exception at guiding and teaching me to help the kids understand.
This kit was great and allowed my classroom to make connections between some real life wonderings they had and some factual information from the past. It was poor timing for some of it as we were completing it straight out of lockdown and then when the BLM movement was in full force which brought up some concerns and emotions regarding racism and inequalities.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Two events occurred that severely disrupted how I was and was not able to use this kit. The first was Covid 19 lockdowns, and the second was that half my Year 5 class was moved on to other classes and were replaced by Year 4s. The Kit could have been bet
A sticky mess greeted us when we opened the bag of Museum items - the jar had leaked its contents. I purchased the book on Tupaia, as I needed to develop my knowledge and understanding of this great man.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Can't answer yet as we haven't done yet.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I would like to build in more opportunities for different people's perspectives to be considered by students.
Fantastic kit! Am holding off to use it til term 4, due to fitting it with topic, but really excited about it. I feel that the artefacts and historical content are amazing for us teachers to learn from. I love the fact that it incorporates different perspectives - such an important aspect of considering history in a balanced way. As always, the kit has been made up with real attention to engagement and fun for students.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? This facilitated many interesting discussions about culture and perspective and connection.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Given the characters and roles, it has created a relatable perspective for students to connect to and consider. This has helped Them to re-evaluate their existing ideas and pre conceptions.
This was a fantastic unit of writing that engaged my students in a real life and hands on experience of New Zealand history. The different characters allowed my students to connect with the different perspectives involved in NZ history and created a more relatable understanding. The results have been a deeper understanding of our national history, and this has been a fantastic tool to facilitate such learning.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It was great. Students enjoyed learning about Tupaia and his role in creating a good relationship between Maori and Cook's crew.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has made me ensure I am not 'lazy' with the knowledge I search for, that is: to seek for other perspectives not just the most well known or well recorded. Seeking the other stories and perspectives on that moment in history.
The ideas and information provided in this kit gave me a great deal of knowledge and understanding of NZ First Encounters. This gave me the confidence to allow me to be creative and adapt the activities and outcomes to suit my class. I learnt a great deal myself and as a New Zealander felt a bit ashamed to not be as knowledgeable on our own history. Teaching the idea of seeing history from different perspectives is really important and this was the main idea taken by my students.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? This kit made it really clear to students that there are multiple, often blurred perspectives to New Zealand history. It was a really good resource to make this clear and helped build upon the learning that had already occurred in the class this year, par
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? This kit has made me realise how valuable and exciting teaching New Zealand History can be for students. It is really exciting knowing that this will be part of the curriculum going forward and we have been presented an engaging way to get this across to
On the whole I thought this was a well designed engaging kit. It presented information about an important topic in an interesting way. The students really liked the character card guess who - game based learning is usually a hit. In regards to the story that was on the character cards, while it was interesting, I found the content a bit too complicated for my class. It took a lot of scaffolding for me to enable them to make the connections and realise how the different story lines fit together. If in future this could be considered while making these resources that would be excellent.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? They learnt that sometimes it is okay to agree to disagree. There is no one solution to a problem and this may mean they’d have to offer their own justifications to the discussions. The debate that ensued during the learning was impressive as students dis
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I am a firm believer in knowing the different perspectives of NZ History. I’ve immersed myself in learning more about other perspectives that came about in the kit and though I will not enforce my own beliefs to children, I am pleased at the fact that the
WOW! What an informative and rich kit for students to learn more about perspectives and the language / dialogue that came about during and after the unit. I was pleased that students had great resources to work with and in turn, they were able to make their own justified opinions. I loved the artefacts and as a teacher, you seek better ways to connect learning with the curriculum. This kit did just that. Thanks School Kit!
