How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The children really enjoyed the first activity where they wrote down their perspective of the scenario we set up about a teachers missing lunchbox. This helped them to see that everyone can see things from multiple ways. They enjoyed marking the people ou
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It made teaching New Zealand history a lot easier, especially with younger children. I really liked the 'Cook's Cook' book too and the links between this and Tuia 250. I learnt a lot myself about New Zealand's history so it has also made me more confident
I have a Year 3/4 class and when we signed up to the kit it was Year 4-8 but then I think it got changed to a higher year level. There were a lot of big ideas for the children to think about and a lot of information for them to analyse. I ended up rewriting the cards so they were easier for the children to understand and that worked really well. This was my first experience with SchoolKit and I was really impressed. So many cool resources and a well planned out unit. The children were really engaged and it was great to mix up our reading and writing sessions for a few weeks. They loved receiving the artefacts in the mail too!

Wow School Kit, you have out done yourselves with this one. We have loved learning about New Zealand history through the Tuia 250 kit. Our next step is to extend our learning to learn about Ngāi Tūāhuriri and our local Ngāi Tahu history. Ngā mihi nui School Kit!!

#Tuia250 Communication is Key! A fantastic project. It was interesting learning about the relationships between the English and Maori and how they would trade/communicate with one another. The Tauira had interesting discussions about the importance of understanding other cultures, languages and perspectives. Our current event with Ihumātao was also discussed and reflected upon. Well done School Kit team.

My tamariki have been writing from the perspective of the items present on the day of the first encounter in Aotearoa - they have loved it, am sharing a range with you - some of them are from capable writers some who have struggles - all loved the process

Throughout Terms two and three, Pelorus students have been learning about Tuia Encounters 250, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of explorer James Cook's arrival in New Zealand. The commemorations have been given the Māori name Tuia, meaning to weave together, symbolising bringing people together in unity. We’ve recently been using another School Kit resource called ‘As I saw it’. We’ve learnt how important it is to not take a single story approach to learning about our history, there are many different perspectives that help to weave the story together to help us learn. Some of the writing activities in this kit have inspired some rather creative stories.

We have really enjoyed the schoolkit. The Guess Who Game was so popular I had to ban them from playing it! They also loved the discussions they had together and often asked if they could ";talk"; about the whole project. These discussions certainly became richer and deeper as they grasped what the whole project was based on. We are in the process of growing potatoes in a bucket as they didn't believe me when I said potatoes grow from a seed potato!

Our class, Room 5 really enjoyed learning about Captain Cook and the kit, AS I saw it. Responses from the students: Student 1: ";I really enjoyed it. It was really helpful to me because I could actually see it happening in real life";. Student 2: "; It was really fun because you got to see what they had, comparing it to what we have now";. Student 3: ";It was amazing because we learnt the history of Captain Cook and the points of view of the Maori and the British";.
