What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It started lots of questions. It got the children thinking about difference and wanting to know why things are like they are. They were most interested in finding out their own story and delving deeper into their culture.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It raised awareness of sex differences. I have a huge divide with boys and girls. They struggle to sit together and work together. This is still an area to develop. They believe teachers have helped to install this thinking.

“I found this kit interesting and challenging. The students raised many questions and challenged their ideas. The main area of development we found was that the students learnt more about themselves and their own culture. They questioned why they wore special religious items and why they practise religious celebrations etc.. By understanding themselves they became more understanding of each other. I personally found it a good way to reflect on my own practise.”

“I did this kit with my Year 3 class and it was a wonderful way to open up discussions that can sometimes be difficult to have with younger children. This kit was mostly age appropriate and it helped my class talk about issues such as racism, sexism, and stereotypes. The activities provided were fun but meaningful for both my students and myself.”

“This kit had some good resources but was a little vague. I appreciated the teacher reflection journal as it was thought provoking and made me more aware of stereotypes. To be more successful I needed some clear direction with lesson plans. I also think a lot of this content was a bit over the heads of my learners.”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The impact was huge. With a large range of diversity within the classroom, it allowed students to understand each other much better. It created and bonded relationships and helped the class come together.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It gave us an avenue of thinking to go back to and reflect on attitudes. It allowed for broader thinking around many aspects of bias, racism etc.
