“I have a Year 1/2 class at Tawa School. It is a very young class - a lot of the children only had 1 term in New Entrants so I have had to think carefully about how to present my teaching. I really liked the kit. It gave me some ideas for subjects to tackle, mainly through investigation time. I started with Kupe - I loved the traditional tale aspect and when I found out that none of the children had heard of him, I felt pleased that I was introducing this story to them. I gave the class a simplified version of the story and we did some collaborative art about the story that they loved doing. We did some descriptive writing about the wheke. I have planned some work about Awarua that I will do later in the year - including the story, artwork and writing facts about an albatross. That is as far as my thinking has gone so far but I love the big poster and was planning on making it part of a display later in the year.”
