In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This class participates with an 'inschool' model of garden to table, so there are regular opportunities to include recipes, food tech, garden experiences throughout the year.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Making vege muffins - some to eat, some to share with whanau, some to put in the freezer, for those days when someone needs more food for the day. This meets our school values of caring for others.

There was plenty of discussions about the various seeds, uses in recipes, flavours, experiences of growing and eating. Children eat a variety of fruit and veges at brain break time (if possible). “The class were very excited to have the kit, and set it up. There was a delay as we had other curricular and school wide events that needed to happen first! Then we got into growing. The children liked matching the herb/vegetable seed to their names. There were great discussions about particular seeds that were unfamiliar to some or many. Ideas for use within dishes were shared. Many parents were brought in to see the growth of seeds, and other activities. As we were donated more seeds, we have been able to grow for our school vegetable garden, and some were grown and taken home.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Writing, science, maths were all incorporated into the little garden kit as they measured time and height, wroteabout their experiences and Who Am I? stories about different veges and fruit.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I will continue to teach by growing plants.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Planting more gardens and caring for them.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? IIt gave an opportunity for children to learn of new vegetables and to discuss the importance of having vegetables in out healthy diet.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This integrated nicely into science, art and maths, where the students could monitor growth and graph their information.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Creating a project based on a chosen vegetable to describe its origins and history, plus how it has developed over the years.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The students have really enjoyed finding out about the variety of vegetables and we have been reading books and researching the benefits of vegetables.

“This was a wonderful resource for my class. The activities provided were engaging and the children enjoyed learning about different vegetables through hands on resources of the vege patch match and the set up. Learning about and identifying a variety of veges was interesting and especially integratingit into other curriculum areas.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? My students learnt new vegetable names and how to plant a seed. Exposed them to the importance of protecting our plants and eating them.

“I loved how my students learnt about new vegetables they had never seen or even tasted before. Their excitement of actually planting a plant all by themselves was a huge highlight for them. Decoding the hidden messages from GLHQ's was exciting and it brought so much oral language and engagement. They felt like they were a part of a nationwide club and they loved it. Thank you for the opportunity to learn about nutrition and healthy eating in a fun and enjoyable way.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We loved singing songs, doing poems, creating art, reading books, writing stories about vegetables.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We were also learning about reducing, reusing and recycling. Prior to this, we would often have quite a lot of food waste. Looking at growing food helped with the children in realising the importance of not wasting food and that vegetables dont just come

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Some children we exposed to new vegetables that they'd never heard of/tried. We talked about vegetables being healthy. Most children bring healthy fruit/vegetables for their brain food each day.

“My class of 22 Year 1 children loved becoming Little Garden League members. The excitement when our kits arrived was high! We had a lot of success with our seedlings and the children got to take theirs home at the end of the term. We've had some photos of the seedlings being replanted at home.”
