What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We continued some growing based science activities and healthy eating as we went into term 4.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We learnt the names of some fruit and vegetables that weren't familiar to the children and discussed the names and uses of some herbs and the flowers.

“It was a great kit that had everything we needed to grow fruit and vegetables. We have an open plan classroom with two classes of 5 year olds and several very high need children so we needed to think how we would use it to get the most out of it. We based our science around it and focused on observations and oral language and created a display with the growing plants and resources. We had fun decoding the messages and attempting to plant the seeds. The game was not a winner though so they used the cards for writing and in their play.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students seemed keen to try the food that they could see growing. I think seeing the entire process and having responsibility for caring for a plant increased the desire to try new veggies.

“My year 2 class were very excited to receive the Little Garden League kit. They loved the top secret nature of the project. It definitely developed and interest in gardening for some of the children. Many of the children used their free time to observe the changes in the seedlings and to write about the LGL characters.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used the Little Garden as a writing topic and also as a context for math problems for a few weeks.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This linked perfectly into our current school inquiry around looking after the environment and started discussions about the benefit of grown ing your own produce.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The students wrote stories about why you should eat vegetables and shared these with family members. They all had great ideas about the nutritional value of eating vegetables.

“The class loved this kit, they learnt about different vegetables and are more eager to try them. The connection to New World allowed them to see this in their weekly shops and also all over the TV and built up their engagement. The resources were wonderful and the secret codes were an exciting aspect of the little garden.”

“The selection of plants was great and very easy to put into practise. As I work with 5 year olds the secret messages and application forms to be part of the club were modified to fit the ability.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? As the seedlings grow it would be awesome to tie it in with healthy cooking/foods. Measurement (what length the seedling/plant is?)

“This was a hit in my class, we loved planting and watching the seedlings grow. We also tied this in with reading/writing- Doing Jack and the Beanstalk. Writing instructions for how to plant a seedling? Looking at what a plant needs to stay alive.”

We were able to theme our LTP for 4 weeks around the garden and supplement with many fine and gross motor skills activities and even co-operative and emotional stations. We were able to build our writing and reading programme around the planting and relat

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Writing experiences for the tamariki. I will be able to use the online resources for other learning themese through to next year. I love how they are free and that you can use them for other purposes. Especially our te reo Māori programme.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Their knowledge on food there are to eat. I think adding in real food and recipes would provide tamariki with the instant front loading and experiencing these products. Some have never seen or heard of some of our mst basic and common vegetables.

“I love all the resources provided to supplement and add to the story. Our new entrants really thrived on this. The card matching game is used most days in our class for action stations. The tamariki sometimes play for purpose or sometimes add their own flavour. We left the seeds until term 4 because of the amount of changes and new starts we had to the class but this proved more difficult than thought. So we would have run it earlier (in retrospect).”
