In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We had an assembly with some current Warriors players about health and nutrition - children were proud to show off some of their new knowledge that went alongside what the assembly was promoting.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Many children had very little knowledge about vegetables that weren't in the common few. They were interested in learning about what they were growing and enjoyed tasting some of the vegetables they hadn't previously heard of.
The children were so excited to receive a parcel and we had some very in-depth discussions about what it could be. When they saw what it was they were eager to share about whanau who had engaged with Little Garden previously. The learning that went along with growing the seeds was tailored to their level and matched perfectly with the follow up activities. Children got so much out of the journey, it was so engaging and worthwhile.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? They were quite knowledgeable about most vegetables. But the reaction to being able to eat flowers was hillarious and we needed up having quite an informative debate regarding whether we should eat flowers the children are not convinced that it is ok to e
The Little Garden is always welcomed in our class. The children love learning the different parts of the plants, planting the seeds and looking after them when they grow. We had a garden club and the children took their plants and planted them and have some produce already. The children took "saving the vegetables" very seriously and not one has died. The class also loved the decodable activity, and filling in the application form and having to fold it a special way. Great to see the older children helping the younger ones in the class. Tuakana teina was present in our class environment all the way. The children were proud of their plants and showing parents and visitors when they visited our class. The kit is great to get the kids to eat vegetables as well. The children started bring vegetables in their lunchboxes more often to school. We also made vege and fruit animals and judged them and then ate them. So many activities were linked into the little garden kit which made for a very eventful term.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? We are currently in the process of creating our own maarakai at school. By having the opportunity to plant such a range of seedlings, it introduced our tamariki to range of vegetables some of them had not previously been exposed to.
Our year 1 tamariki loved getting involved in their Little Garden Project. It was a great way to introduce them to a range of new vegs and to begin them on their gardening journey.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? They tamariki went on to explore different vegetables on google.
An excellent resource. The tamariki have enjoyed every step of their learning journey with the Little Garden resource. They have rushed into the room every morning to see if their seeds have sprouted even more than the day before. This resource has also increased the amount and quality of oral language. It has also been awesome for writing especially with the use of adjectives used when describing the seeds (tiny; small…) to the plants to the environment the seeds were planted in. Planting the little gardens lead onto the local garden shop owner coming along to school and helping the tamariki plant vegetable plants in our school garden all in preparation for our hangi in early February; a meet the whanau night. They discovered the difference between weeds and plants as they prepared the garden patch. Weeds were put in the compost pile.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our tamariki love to eat healthy but this isn’t always what’s available to them at home. It was awesome to show them how things grown into fruits and vegetables from the garden… rather than just thinking they come from Pak n Save.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables?
