How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? They certainly understand the germination process and the significance of kowhai trees and plants in general. We used much of the learning in our school garden as well and the importance of looking after plants to get the best from them.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? We were able to gather information and use it across many curriculum areas. Nature gave a real context for investigating and exploring for the boys.

This kit has tied in extremely well with our school looking at developing a native bush area. The senior boys class have recently planted a number of native trees on a local farm. They are excited about their kowhai seeds sprouting and caring for them at school until they are established enough to plant in the farm space.

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? We have a much better understanding of how to care for new plants with respect to weather, location, predators, soil needs, sunlight and water requireents.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? We found we had 2 parents that were qualified in this area. They were able to share their knowledge of ground preparation, seedling/plant choice and continuous care for the new environment.

This kit has tied in extremely well with our school looking at improving 3 areas of our environment. The Juniors are in charge of extending the sandpit area, the Middles are in charge of the vegetable garden and mud kitchen area and the Seniors are in charge of the entrance way, a new school sign in a paddock that requires planting and beautification of the area.

What cross curricular learning opportunities arose from using Nature as the context? We delved a little deeper into the conditions for propagation by having two conditions for the plants - warmth/condensation vs unstable temperature. The children were able to see how obviously the former helped with seedling germination.

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? It was interesting for them to see their place in the world. We already have a bush kaitiaki programme running in the school so this has strengthened and tied into that knowledge.
What were the benefits of using Nature as a context for learning? This kit was the basis for a fascinating look into our local plants and our place in the world. The students really enjoyed the process of preparing and propagating the kowhai seeds.

Due to the interruptions of Covid, we felt we would have been able to be more consistent with this kit without the large breaks in between. Our kowhai seeds are growing nicely in our nursery and the students are keeping an eye on them.

How has the kit impacted you and your students feelings toward nature? For most of the class it has made them think twice as to how the interact with nature and how 'boring' our school environment is at the moment!

Room 6 started off with a hiss and roar with this kit. They started off engaged and really keen to make a change to our environment. Unfortuantly, once we started exploring our school we couldn't really find anywhere that captured the kids interest. We planted the seedlings ( and had a few sprout!!) but I struggled to keep the kids engaged. I do think that a lot of this was down to the year we are having and the uncertainty going on as I started this kit just after lockdown. I don't think it was the kit itself but more my class and their involvement with it.
