How did this kit build awareness and understanding of the NZ Navy and it's contributions to our history? None of my students had any whanau who were involved in the NZ Navy, so learning about what happened on Christmas Island and about the Rainbow Warrior sinking was new learning for them. The teacher shared her own story about visiting / seeing the Rainbow

What would you say the impact of this kit has been on your students? The students in this class struggled with the concept of being nuclear free as it is not something that they have grown up even knowing about. The main impact for these stuents is that they now have some knowledge of our nuclear free histories.

Which resources were most engaging and most useful to students? All the resources were engaging for the students. They picked up the newspaper articles and we had to do several lessons about the way they hd been written and the emotive language used in them.

“My students found this kit a challenge to engage with. We felt like it would have been more suited to an older age group that Y7. As the teacher, I thought it would be insteresting for the students to learn about, knowing that some of their relatives may have been active in the nuclear free protests in NZ, but we struggld to find any of our whanau who knew anything. That being said, the stdeunts now have some knowledge of a time in our histories that continues to impact upon our lives in the current day.”

What would you say the impact of this kit has been on your students? They got a good understanding of how small NZ is compared to other countries. Also they saw the different voices that were trying to protect NZ i.e Navy, protests

Which resources were most engaging and most useful to students? The whole kit was suitable for my students. The best thing is you are able to build on the kit by using it for inquiry.

Generally positive - many of the items in the kit connected to things we had studied or at least discussed, so it was quite a useful reminder for students of the areas we'd previously covered (we used the kit after completing the topic of study).

The replication of primary sources in particular was very well done and provided for a lot of discussion - the students were highly engaged and there was a lot of hands on learning and interest in finding out more about the particular item in hand.”
