How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I was pleased to notice that there was a story about my home town included which engaged myself as well as the kids.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Absolutely! The fact that we accidentally started with a post card that is from our local area really showed me how I could potentially deliver future learning of our surrounds.

“Have only explored 1 postcard which turned out to be a local one. This engaged the kids more. Love the resources that were included. The amount of things they learnt that not only taught them the history of an area, but also valuable skills such as reading a historical photo. I think it incorporates the new histories curriculum very well and I am looking forward to teaching the rest of the kit next year.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Starting small having good ole display tables with artefacts of the past. Understanding, knowing and doing. Understanding ourselves at level 1-3 was my starting point even though they are year 4//5

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? We discussed only one story and used the photos from the rest of the kit. It had a different type of impact on my class as we keep junk journals and they collect all sorts of paraphernalia to put in them. Organising and writing more purposeful statements

“hi everyone at the beginning of this term my class did an Inquiry Learning Project on the History of Porirua. I set the kit up to spark curiosity and just as well because it leads us to thinking about all the different cultures that make our town. memorabilia and objects and souvenirs from our past contributed to the makeup of our town. We created our own kit from whanau photos of the royal family, the opening of the first Mcdonald's , Whittakers lolly paper wrappers. the hardest part was deciding what part of the history of Porirua did they want to research. It's quite amazing really we are a 50 year plus young city. but what an amazing journey . Even the building of our school. Recently we had a Flag ceremony for our local community and all seven places of education were represented. Another taonga for our school. so my class chose different things that made up a bigger picture of who they are. The kit was the best part of our Inquiry leading us into different possibilities as opposed to us focusing on particular part. The School kits are my favourite part”

“The range of different stories was fantastic and the learning chunked into the different columns was good as you could extend students who needed it. We really liked the site attached to the learning, although there was a lot of content on there we had the flexibility to choose what to share and adapted the kit to suit our needs. The artefacts in the kit were incredible.”
