What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We have included persuasive writing, poetry, statistics, science and social science. We have connected with a group within our community that work as volunteers at the scientific reserve.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We will continue to develop the relationship with the Waikanae Estuary Care Group and work with them on some up coming planting and restoration work.

“Two classes worked together looking at our estuary area that is also a scientific reserve. We learnt a lot about the importance of the area and were really excited to help keep it clean. The gloves and bags were awesome. We collected a lot of rubbish, the equivalent of 5 full bags. We looked at it back at school. The sorting was hard because lots of the plastic was small. We did sort the larger pieces of rubbish by types but the students lost interest and didn't sort by colour. We were left very happy that all that yucky rubbish wasn't going into the ocean.”
