We had intended to use the kit at end of term 3/ into term 4 as stated in my original emails with you. However, as we had lockdown in term 3 which took out 4 weeks of teaching due to the disruption. Then the restriction on interactions due to levels and going out into the community, we did not proceed with the volunteer activity. We changed our whole approach and did not look at volunteering at all

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Children learnt that not everyone in our community can afford luxury items or may be a little less off than others. We had to keep a limit on our box so it also taught the children about sticking to a budget and not over capitalising on our box of goodies

What type of project did your class undertake? Project for Those in Need
Our class worked together creating and making two Christmas boxes filled with presents for children in need. These boxes will be given to Tauranga Shoe box Christmas who will distribute these to those in need. The children wrote letters to supermarkets, gift stores, The Warehouse, KMart asking for various items. We were lucky we had a nine year old boy and a nine year old girl to buy for. Families also donated money and children went shopping for items

What type of project did your class undertake? Water Based Project
This was a great way to encourage our students to care for ur local environment as it raised awareness amongst them of some of our local concerns. We actually made our focus the local river that some of our students like to swim in during the summer months.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The passion project was to make a difference in our school. The children came up with school gardens and fruit trees which then progressed to constructing a green house with recycled materials. We have written persuasive texts to businesses for donations

Overall a good kit as to where to start with my class and how I could connect a unit of teaching with our big idea in our syndicate. My approach was to get students to be more involved in our school and hopefully see the children volunteer in their community. The aim was to allow the students to see another view of how we can make a difference and how this could benefit our people of our town.
