We really enjoyed learning about the SVA and the impact they had in CHCH after the earthquake. To add in a cultural lens to this project, we also looked at a few other examples of people impacting their community in a positive way (some Māori role-models). We then brainstormed ideas of what we felt were things our community might need - ākonga asked questions, did observations etc. to inform their thinking. We had a go with the roles but this proved to be a little more complex than we needed - and we wanted the main focus to be on our community impact - so we ended up not using the roles as suggested in the kit (we were a Year 3 and 4 group so perhaps would have worked better for older ākonga). We then designed our community project in 3 teams - based on our ākonga interests: Beautify our school - art-based mahi 2. Connect with our community - rest home visit, performance and morning tea 3. Te Taiao - planting session at school plus rubbish collection and analysis We had a community project day where our 3 groups went out and did their mahi - and we have just had a celebration and sharing back of what we did.

I took a group of children to the National Youth Leaders Day in Christchurch where Sam Johnson was talking about the impact he made with the SVA after the earthquakes in Christchurch and they were inspired to do their own service, (which they needed to do as part of the William Pike Challenge) The pack was perfect as it reinforced everything that Sam said at the Leaders Day specifically around finding an authentic problem, communicating with the people involved, designing job titles and descriptions, setting goals, and everybody having their own strengths. The bands were an added bonus and are still worn today! The students took up the challenge that RDA needed funding and a little more awareness of what they did, so made up a number of successful fundraising activities using Sam's plan around jobs etc.

This school kit allowed our year 4 students to contribute to the community. The children brainstormed community organisations they would like to fundraise for and then voted on which group to support. They selected the SPCA. We then contacted them to see the best ways we could provide support. They said cash donations and towels, blankets and sheets are always appreciated. The children organised a coin trail which raised $262.90 and a sale of sweets. popcorn and dog toys (which they made at school) which raised $406.40. The children took part in both events and made posters which were placed around our school to promote the events. They also collected a large number of blankets, towels and sheets which were donated to the SPCA.

The children really enjoyed coming up with ideas on who to help and how to help. They enjoyed the process of creating products and selling them for a good cause. The box provided great resources which gave the children ownership of different jobs.

I have been doing the Student Volunteer Army project since 2017 and had great success once again this year. These kits are so useful for helping kids develop empathy.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We were undertaking an inquiry around protecting our natural environment, and through the volunteering the children did they really came to understand why we need to protect the natural environment and the sorts of things they can do to make a difference.

I got the SVA kit, and it was such a great resource for my Year 3 &; 4 class. Everything was presented in a lovely way, and the children loved getting badges and wristbands to really help them feel like they were part of a team and contributing to something. It was good to have the kit to guide us through a topic/inquiry around making a difference, and even though we adapted some things to suit us a bit better everything still worked and went according to plan.
