A fun activity for a group, lots of experimenting and students enjoyed it. Going any further was hindered by lockdown in Auckland unfortunately. Well done team for another great kit.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Further work with chemical reactions, now they have a basic understanding of the concept. More observations - this kit taught the students that they need to look for certain things eg. bubbles because it meant... Having a control, trialling and then mak

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? It was great to look at chemical reactions before and also learn about the Malliard Reaction so they were able to understand some of the changes that the cake had made when baked. By substituting 80g of the cake with veggies was a good challenge and a lot

I absolutely love this kit! The whole idea of the 60g x 4 was a bit to get our heads around...can you really make a cake?! It was a terrific way to introduce chemistry to the students. The observations to find the bubbles in the cake encouraged the children to stop, look and think about the chemical reaction that had taken place. I will definitely do this again!

The kids had so much fun with the measuring and mixing component of this kit. They loved being able to swap out sugar for different sweet ingredients. It fitted in beautifully with our maths topic of fractions and measurement. Our school has just become part of lunches in schools so it was great for the kids to see that healthy food tastes great and doesn't need to contain sugar.

I'm sorry this feedback was delayed. I am afraid that I didn't actually get to use this myself. We ran out of time in Term 2 due to finishing boards for science fair. I didn't want it to gather dust on my shelf so I passed it onto my colleague to use this term as they were studying chemistry. I have asked her about it so am posting her feedback.

I think we rushed a little with the scientific thinking for this kit, we just missed a window due to lockdown to tie it in well with our inquiry learning. We did develop the student's understanding of scientific change and their perceptions around the taste of healthy foods.

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? They learnt lots about the chemical/physical changes. Also able to apply proportional thinking to the cake making. Gave a real life context to the ratio learning we had been doing.
