With this awesome experience I'm sure the children will be curious to experiment further egplain flour vs self-raising flour or try different kinds of sugar eg maple syrup or honey or other natural sweeteners. How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Realising that sugar could be substituted with other ingredients that have a sugar content. The measurement component alongside the chemical reactions when combining certain ingredients. Learning how each component helps the cake form in a particular way.

“Unfortunately, I left getting to do this kit until late this term and could only manage a few children getting the chance to carry out the chemistry of baking. But oh how those children totally engaged with swapping out sugar content for a vege/or fruit component. They were keen to try a lot of different ideas and I'm sure they will now they have the 60/60/60/60 cemented in their brain. Filling out the reviews to compare their results was fun and I'm sure they didn't even realise they were learning.”

“This kit was fun and interesting to do. The children worked collaboratively to design, measure ingredients, make, eat and review the cakes. After the first session they had interesting conversations about the chemistry and flavour of their cakes and were keen to explore more.”

“So sorry we have not yet been able to use thiis kit yet! Due to a number of changes within our school leadership and focus made, this kit has needed to take a pause. However, looking forward into Term 1 next year, I feel this will easily be able to be included into our T1 overview.”

“Well resourced with a good selection. It took a bit to organise and figure out the logistics to complete it. I was able to tie it in with our science fair as a whole class example experiment. I'll try to do it again next year with a few of my own tweaks.”
