I had a strange incident with my Barclay card this week. I tried to use it in a shop and the payment was declined. As I am confident that I have funds and my usage of the card is usually way below the limit I had to come and call them to enquire about the reasons for declining the small transaction I attempted. Here is the story.
My direct debit for the minimum payment went out on its usual day. I have funds in my current account to cover it. But it got returned by Barclaycard. They then charged me a penalty fee for late payment and interest charges. I ask why did you return the direct debit? the reason is laughable: because you paid manually several times we canceled the direct debit. I say, but the direct debit went out from my account, which means you canceled it on purpose after it left the account to make me fail to pay on time. I made a formal complaint and it was upheld, they reversed the charges. But the point here is I lost trust in this credit card. It is like they want you to miss your payment so they can mount up the charges. I have been with Barclaycard and Barclays Bank for over 25 years, This incident is the straw that broke the camel's back.
