Well for a start I wouldn't have even given 1 star, I had to just to trigger the response box! All I needed was a jump start from home so that I could go and buy a new battery. It took 1&1/2 hrs on the phone from 2pm yesterday, being passed through 6 different departments to eventually establish that RAC had had troubles with the direct debit system and my policy had subsequently expired. I had to reinstate the policy & pay a £25 surcharge because I called them out on the first day of a new policy, and was then told there was a 4 hour wait, by which time Halfords would be closed. So the guy on the phone said he'd booked a call out for 9am this morning, by 11.20 I still hadn't heard anything so I called them again only to be told that there was no callout booked! So they booked another callout, told me it would be at least an hour and a half, and 10 minutes later I got a call from the mechanic who was sitting outside my old address 250 miles away. I've always said that I've never had a problem with RAC breakdown, but that would be because I've never had to call them out. I just thank god that I wasn't stuck in the middle of nowhere because I wouldn't have known that my policy no longer existed until then. In the end my elderly father has been to jump start my car, but when I tried to cancel the callout I was told I couldn't and I had to speak to a rep. I was put through, gave my membership number and then the call was cut off. That's it, I'm done. I've called the renewal team and asked for my £25 surcharge back, and ditched them.
