Awful company, ring then say follow a link, link didn't work so had to ring again, ETA changed 3 times, later, & later, in the end it was going to be 7hr wait, im a woman traveling on her own in a strange place.no update for 3hrs, waited 4hrs & decided to drive home with engine light on because if I broke down on the motorway I was told I would be top priority. 3 month ago I waited 24hrs in my other vehicle, because I was at home I wasn't a priority, after 11yrs of being with RAC we will be leaving them next month. Awful service. Avoid at all cost.

Several phone calls before I could speak to somebody. They kept directing me to their website. Really good if you are standing in the rain on a busy road - which fortunately I wasn't. Why can't RAC just deal on the phone and give a membership card like the AA?

I’m a member of RAC and called them out for a breakdown due to overheating. There was a leak of coolant. Then booked for RAC to carry out the repair. It took three visits from three different mechanics to finally identify the problem and replace the fan and ‘pipe’. Charged me over £300 but the coolant is still leaking and I get no response from RAC whose records of the work seem to be completely inaccurate. I’m 75 years of age with mobility issues and rely on my car.

Country lane, fast approaching traffic at over 60mph, young child onboard and in darkness with no street lighting. Broke down and used the RAC app to report breakdown. Received indication that assistance would be 3hrs 40mins to 6 hrs 40mins. Obviously recovery must have been traveling from one end of the uk to another to offer a service like this is totally unacceptable. Only excuse provided by RAC was to refer me to the terms of the breakdown policy. Standing with a child at the side of a road is a recipe for a fatal accident which I have been to many. Obviously a company that doesn’t care about the service it provides. Thanks RAC

Out with my wife on our motorcycle in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders when the clutch cable snapped on the bike, we pushed the bike into a carpark and phoned recovery which I have paid for for years as part of my insurance cover. It took ages for anyone to answer the phone and when they did we gave them our breakdown address and how many of us ect. We received a text around 30 minutes later to say that it would be around 8 hours before anyone could come out to us. An hour later we received a text asking for the breakdown address and how many people was there to be picked up, 30 minutes later we received the same text again and we were starting to feel stressed with what was happening. We kept getting the same text asking for the same details. My wife had to go to a cafe to charge her phone as the battery was getting low. Eventually we got a text saying that the recovery lorry would be with us in 30 minutes, the only problem was it was at a different address from the one we had given them at least 5 times. Also they told us that the lorry can only carry one passenger, We had to phone them again and got this angry guy on the phone who would not listen to us and kept arguing about the address, eventually we got somebody else to listen after the first guy just hung up and we had to phone again. They arranged a taxi for my wife to get home. They ordered it to the wrong address so we had to phone again, my wife had to plead with them to listen as her phone was nearly dead by this point. Eventually the lorry and the taxi turned up which was good, On the way home I asked the recovery driver to drop the bike off at the bike garage, and then drop me off at home, he said no, it was either the garage or home but not both, as it was late at night by now and I was stressed out and feeling sick with all of the days proceedings I just opted to be dropped off at home. The driver also said that his company do not have any vehicles that have 2 passenger seats and he regularly has the problem of more than one person needing a lift. He said his boss does not care and is quite happy with the situation as it is. When I got home I felt really ill with a splitting headache and nausea due to all of the stress of the day. Now I am left with the expense of trying to arrange transport for my bike to the garage and so far I have found no one to do it. We called recovery at 2pm and got home after 10pm and we only broke down about 30 miles away from where we live. Also if my wife had not argued and pleaded with them they would have been ok with leaving her stranded. Absolutely terrible experience.

Was left stranded in a remote area by the RAC for over 7 hours in the dark with my two children who are both autistic. Paid for a recovery van that could pick the three of us up, but in their infinite wisdom, sent a truck 6 hours later, that could only transport one person. A complete farce, was left with almost no food or water, no duty of care whatsoever. Disgusting treatment, will never use again.

On 8 August, my campervan broke down on a French motorway. Frustrating? Sure. But what followed was worse. ➡️ Within 20 minutes I’d called RAC. ➡️ Within 2 hours we were at a depot. ➡️ Within minutes I’d worked out the problem myself (alternator not charging the battery). And then… nothing. No diagnostics. No hire car. No onward plan. Just days of chasing calls, broken promises, and being told to “wait until Monday.” We ended up booking our own hotel late at night, paying for taxis, then abandoning the van altogether to fly back — leaving all our belongings locked inside. Ten days later, the van still hadn’t even been moved to a garage. The lesson? When you buy breakdown cover, you’re not buying a tow truck. You’re buying peace of mind. You’re buying someone to take ownership when you can’t. And that’s exactly what we didn’t get. What made me angriest wasn’t the van breaking down. It was the breakdown in service. Don’t tell customers what you can’t do — tell them what you will do. Don’t make them chase you for updates — give them clarity. Don’t hide behind “partners” — take responsibility. A van can be fixed. Trust, once lost, is much harder to repair.

Appalling service. Don’t go near them. I bought a new used car and went online to change the details for my RAC Car Insurance. I was given a new monthly payment that was more than double!!! I spoke to the online person from the RAC and he said this cost couldn’t be reduced and my only other option was to cancel the insurance but that I would incur a huge cancellation fee. I did cancel and made a mental note to never use the RAC again. I checked on Compare the Market and the monthly premium for my car insurance hadn’t changed with the change of car with the other companies. RAC are Cowboys and just saw an opportunity for exploitation.

Shocking recovery service. We broke down on M5 on Sunday 17th and phoned RAC at 14.08. Eventually had a patrol reach us after over 4 hours.taken to the next services and left there around 7pm to wait recovery and onward travel to Lancashire. Recovery was pushed further and further back. We had to sleep in the car. RAC provided us with an Uber at 06.50 to get us home and told us our car would follow. We are still waiting for the car. It is now Tuesday 19th 46 hours after we broke down. No nearer to having our car back and being able to get it fixed.

I broke down on Saturday and called RAC at 16:30. I was initially told that someone will be with me between 17:50-19:50. Around 17:10, the EAT changed to 19:30:20:30. I called them again to say that I was a woman on my own 100+ miles away from home on a busy road and I couldn't keep waiting indefinitely. Their response was that all I had was a basic coverage of 10 miles tow so even if they came, they couldn't take me home. No mention of roadside help and having a look at my car, as per the policy. Long story short, after changing the EAT a handful of times, the passed my details to one of their partners, Richford, which was even worse than RAC. I was lied on numerous occasions, and finally rescued at 3am, after trying to push my car myself and drive and stop every 100 meters, to finally make it to a friend's house 11 miles away. Even the police offered to help me and take me somewhere safe and yet I turned that down because I was deceived by RAC and Richford company that their driver was on his way. No one cared if I was safe, despite contacting them a few times and telling them I did not feel safe 2am in an unknown area in the dark, not able to even leave my car to go to the toilet. Not to mention, that no one ever saw my car to identify the issue, apart from the guy who came to rescue me, after he dropped me off, who simply had to record the codes for the issue but told me he is not a mechanic and could not repair or offer an opinion on my car. At no point during these 11 hours someone from RAC asked if I was ok or contacted me to see if I was safe or ask for feedback to be able to investigate what had happened or why they had fallen short on their service. Avoid avoid avoid. Never again.

Broke down due to total electrical failure. Not able to move car off of road. RaC wouldn't even log the call until police said it was safe for them to do so. This was about midnight. I am 88 and was with my Son, The police attended quickly to support us. Had to have recovery to get us back, obviously creating a big bill. Are they not equipped to attend breakdowns in the dark. ,

Called out for a stuck ignition key. They phoned to say it was a common issue with my key (apparently a common issue with the brand of my car) and that I’d need a locksmith, claiming garages don’t deal with barrels or ignitions. Offered no real help, gave wrong advice, and left me with a dangerously hot ignition lock that was draining my battery. I later fixed it myself in minutes - completely useless and a waste of money.

We called twice, in the space of a week to get European breakdown cover. Each time they said somebody would call us back for a quote. Nobody bothered calling. We tried a third time and the estimated time to just answer the call was 30 mins. We called Red Pennant and they answered straight away, gave us a quote and were cheaper than RAC was last year. If RAC can't answer a call to take your money, what good would they be in an emergency!

I haven't called out the RAC for over 20 years but had to today. It started off well on my phone call at 9.00am and was told to expect someone at 11. At 1pm I rang again but was cut off after 25 minutes wait, I tried again and was told it might be 5 before I get help. This didn't use to be like that so after nearly 40 years I'm thinking of looking elsewhere.
