I am a rather keen amateur cabinet maker and have used plastic coating a number of times. It does give a very durable surface and is hard wearing.
The surface remains stable and, more importantly, does not deteriorate with time.
I have used plastic coating on a number of hardwoods including oak, mahogany,
cherry and tulip wood (although this is not a hardwood).
If the surface does get damaged then it can be recovered with further plastic coating applications.
