It should almost go without saying that the build-quality of the wallet I received is as close to flawless as possible--no blemishes in the leather or frayed stitching. I ordered the Fat Herbie in Color #8 (100% Shell Cordovan, and extra pocket, and stained edges). As I wrote to Phil in an email, I was over the moon with the product when I received it. The wallet exceeded my expectations. I know there has been a movement to use smaller wallets these days, but I try to carry a little cash and all of my cards and ID on me at all times. This wallet is able to hold anything I throw in it--cash, cards, receipts--a small fridge; it's awesome. There are no problems fitting this wallet in my back pocket, and the times I've sat on it, because of it's flatter layout and profile than a traditional bifold or trifold, I didn't feel uncomfortable. It fits in the front pocket of my jeans, but it looks awkward in the front pockets of chinos (unless you've got a pair with deep pockets). The Fat Herbie with an extra pocket is a little "fatter" but the wallet folds with no problem. Since the wallet was a custom order, it took a little over two weeks for me to receive it (and that's not bad, considering Phil gave me a four-week estimate). The wallet is 100% Shell Cordovan, so the interior of the wallet has a "Shell against Shell" friction, so I can already see that the interior wears rougher than the exterior. Shell Cordovan is the best leather in the world; however, small surface nicks and scuffs do appear in the leather. So if you're considering a Shell wallet and you think that it will remain pristine after daily use, then that is an unrealistic expectation. After wearing it every day, I have brushed my wallet with a horse hair brush for a few minutes, so the small surface imperfections that I've put on it from daily wear aren't really all that noticeable. And in a little over two weeks of owning the wallet, I've brushed a luster on it even greater than when I got the wallet: it's already highly reflective.
Ashland's Youtube channel is the best. Even though it may be a little time consuming, it's possible to learn almost everything about Ashland and Horween leathers from the channel. But, Ashland's website needs a little update to help customers see all the products and services that Ashland offers; however, Phil was (and has been) very helpful with the many questions that I've sent him. So customer service is pretty much top notch.
I was looking to buy myself a decent wallet, so I started looking at "big name", designer wallets. I am so glad I found Ashland instead. I know those other designer wallets aren't as good in terms of quality; they aren't Shell Cordovan (from Horween), and they probably don't come with lifetime warranties like Ashland wallets do. For those of you looking to, buy a high-quality wallet that will last decades, I couldn't recommend Ashland enough. Pull the trigger--you won't be disappointed.
