This turned out to be a damaged item. I did email Calumet about it but got no response.
Fortunately, I managed to repair the damage which took a bit of time and money (another £60 to £70) and the lens is now operational. Surprises me that Calumet do not check their items properly or bother to reply to mails; no doubt they would say I must have dropped the lens or something and never got an email from me. So no stars for a photographic retailer I have used without problems in the past.
