Wow, how embarrassing! I have used CARFAX a number times. I should be able to say I ALWAYS use CARFAX, but I recently had a lapse of intelligence. We found a great-looking car sitting in a supermarket parking lot for sale. We called the phone number shown and before the owner could get there, 3 other potential buyers showed up. Obviously, others were interested at the asking price. The owner showed up. We looked it over, We drove it and noticed it not running a smooth as it should. I ran a scan for the "check engine light" that was showing. No big deal, I thought. The title was in some woman's name which we understood as the owner's girlfriend. But it was signed. It looked right. We bought the car. Then I learned that it needed Major engine work. I also found dealer-to-dealer transfer paperwork under the front seat. Lots of it. Six dealers handled the car, apparently, and it even went to two dealers in Mexico. All within 5 or 6 weeks. At this point, I got a Carfax report for it. Sure enough. Lots of info. Much history. The guy we met had bought it at auction 3 weeks prior, There were many reasons showing on the report that would have steered me clear of the car---If I had only had the CARFAX report first.
