I was looking for a Civic Hybrid late in 2014. I found one on Craigslist with 122k miles for $4500. The ad said it was a 2005 with a clean title. I met the guy at a local Walgreens, drove it, and had my mechanic check it out. It looked and ran good, so I offered $4150 and got the car. When I got home that night I looked at the bill of sale, and the mileage was listed as TMU (True Mileage Unknown). After googling to find out what TMU meant, I called the guy. I was livid, but he assured me it was just a generic bill of sale from the internet, and he would print me another with the right mileage. I went by his house the next day, and got the new invoice. I felt good at that point. The next morning, I was getting ready to go to the MVD to get the new title and plates. At the last minute I decided to pull up a CARFAX. The car had 212k miles in 2012!!!! I showed up at his house, CARFAX in had, and got my money back. I ended up spending a little more on a 2008, with a clean CARFAX, and I love my new car. Thank you CARFAX for saving me from a certain disaster. I will NEVER buy another car without first getting the CARFAX!!!!!
