Trusting Chisholm Hunter with a simple repair job on a sentimental piece of jewellery has made things worse.
On 4 March 2025, I paid Chisholm Hunter to repair my partner's necklace by fixing a new bolt clasp and catch and then re-plating it. I was shocked after collecting the necklace on 30 March 2025 to discover the necklace had only been re-plated so a new clasp and catch cannot now be affixed because they cannot be welded onto rhodium.
The store sales assistant agreed that the necklace still look "unsightly" and informed me that the repair-shop notes in their system show the jeweller "decided" the new clasp and catch were unnecessary so only re-plated instead. After multiple attempts to resolve this, I was eventually offered a partial refund. However, an independent jeweller has advised the plating needs to be removed before a new clasp/catch can be added which will be even more costly OR may even be impossible, so the partial refund is clearly unacceptable. I now face more expensive work than I did before entering this contract with Chisholm Hunter.
Chisholm Hunter never called me back to process even the partial refund as advised. This followed the same the pattern of multiple promised calls back that were never attempted.
I wrote to the email address Chisholm Hunter's customer service department gave me, detailing the chronology of events and why I was unhappy with this breach of contact. I asked for at least a 50% refund plus completion of the contracted repair work, or for a full refund plus a reasonable sum in compensation so that I can either have the repair done elsewhere or replace the necklace if necessary. After over 2 months I still have no reply!
I have raised a dispute via my credit card, but this will apparently only result at best in a refund. It does not settle the damages for the obvious loss that I will suffer by paying to have the (now more expensive) remedial work done elsewhere OR to replace this (irreplaceable) necklace.
I find myself in a much worse position than I would be had I never set foot in Chisholm Hunter's store at 32 Buchanan Street, Glasgow and my partner is understandably devastated. This has taken a surprising amount of time I could not afford to give and caused me stress I could really do without. Avoid at all costs.
