It's like a completely different sofa! Comfort Works light blue velvet is so much softer and cozier than the original stiff IKEA fabric. So far, it has been claw-safe, as promised. When my cat does try (not often), he doesn't seem to gain any traction.
Small bonus: the bag the covers came can be re-purposed as a cat toy!
